Since opening its doors in 2001, The Mediterranean Food Co has grown into a beloved Christchurch institution. A bastion of warmth, hospitality and, of course, fine food, miraculously removed from its semi-industrial inner city location.
Back when founder Gerald Crotty first conceived of The Mediterranean Food Co, his vision was to bring a piece of his Italian heritage to the heart of Christchurch and bring to them quality ingredients from the Mediterranean.
In April 2017, The Mediterranean Food Co marked another major milestone in its journey when Gerald passed the baton on to Paul Johnstone and Andrew Brady.
Paul and Andrew met soon after Paul had taken on the wholesale arm of Med Foods as a progression from his existing business, North Canterbury Foods. At this stage Andrew was still working with a range of corporate clients to uncover and grow their business potential. The two quickly recognized the potential synergy between Paul’s long experience in the food and hospitality industry and Andrew’s business development skills.
Several months later, they took a deep breath, put on new hats, and pulled the retail and wholesale sides of The Mediterranean Food Co back together with a clear vision of becoming the premium supplier of Mediterranean products in the South Island.
Paul and Andrew continue to work closely with Gerald to continue nurturing The Mediterranean Food Co’s long and valued relationships with suppliers back in Italy, while also exploring new product ranges to enhance New Zealand’s unique food and lifestyle culture. With The Mediterranean Food Co Rangiora café already attracting rave reviews for its great service and friendly, intimate atmosphere, they are also working on an exciting plan for a new Deli right in Christchurch’s re-emerging retail heart.
Backed by a great team that shares their love of fine food and commitment to premium service, Paul and Andrew can’t wait to bring the best of the Mediterranean to your table.
The best place to catch Paul is before hours out in the The Mediterranean Food Co Rangiora café, where he’ll be sitting with a freshly-brewed short black and a terrifyingly full daily planner. A long-time foodie and a passionate advocate for top-quality service, Paul spent a number of years building North Canterbury Foods into a major food supplier throughout the Canterbury region before taking on the wholesale arm of Mediterranean Foods in 2015. Reuniting the wholesale and retail arms in 2017 has put him exactly where he loves to be-right on the leading edge of providing the best possible food experience to everyone. When Paul isn’t trying to change the world one meal at a time, he can be found out running or riding in the hills, embroiling his children in spontaneous adventures, or packing his passport for another sourcing trip to Europe.
For The Mediterranean Food Co customers who have spotted Andrew with his sleeves rolled up behind a coffee machine, it might be a surprise to find that this man spent the last two decades deep in the corporate world of accountancy, finance and providing business advice. Seduced by not only the great business potential he saw in The Mediterranean Food Co, but also the chance to offer real products to real people, he is relishing the first-hand engagement with customers, business partners, and The Mediterranean Food Co team. An enthusiastic multisport athlete, Andrew competes in endurance events around the world and still manages to find time for another favorite pursuit-exploring New Zealand’s back-country huts with his son.
Catch these two together and they might look like they’re having far too good a time-but that’s all part of the plan. After all, there’s no point being passionate, ambitious and incredibly driven if you aren’t also having a truckload of fun. As the fine folk of the Mediterranean would certainly agree …
